Potato sandwich or desi style sandwich is a North Indian style of sandwich. It is made with potato masala. For desi style sandwich boiled and mashed potatoes are cooked with chopped onions and tomatoes and flavor with garam masala. This sandwich makes a hearty breakfast. You can also make this sandwich for kids' lunch box, for evening snacks, for weekend brunch, or even for weekend picnics. Use whole wheat bread to make the healthier version. Ingredient For Filling : (Makes 4 Sandwich)

  • Boiled potatoes 3-4 medium/about a pound
  • Onion 1 medium
  • Tomato 1 medium
  • Green chilies 2
  • Cumin seeds ½ tsp
  • Salt 1½ tsp/ to taste
  • Red chili powder ½ tsp
  • Coriander powder 1 tsp
  • Garam masala ¼ tsp
  • Chopped coriander leaves 2 tbsp
  • Oil 1½ tbsp

Ingredient For Sandwich

  • Whole wheat bread 8 slices
  • Ghee/Butter to brush

Method of preparation

  1. Peel boiled potatoes, and mash them properly.
  2. Peel wash and finely chop the onion. Wash and finely chop tomato. Remove the stem, wash and finely cut the green chili.
  3. In a nonstick pan heat oil, add cumin seeds. When seeds stop crackling, add chopped chilies and chopped onion. Fry until golden. Takes about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and fry for another 2-3 minutes. Add coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Fry until masala leaves the sides of the pan.
  5. Add mashed potatoes and garam masala and fry for 2-3 minutes. Turn off the heat.
  6. Add chopped coriander leaves. Potato filling is ready.

  1. Heat a flat griddle. Take a bread slice, spread a layer of potato filling on the bread, and then cover with another slice of bread to make the sandwich.

  1. Now grease the griddle with a little butter and place the sandwichon it. Cook on medium to low heat. Grease the other side of the sandwich, flip the sandwich and cook.
  2. You can also make the sandwich in the sandwich toaster or in the grill.
  3. Delicious Sandwich are ready to serve. Cut the sandwich diagonally. Serve with tomato ketchup or may be with pudina chutney.

Some Tips/ Suggestions :

If you do not eat onions, make the potato filling without onions; it tastes equally good.

I have used whole wheat bread for the preparation of sandwich.
