Sambhar Powder

This is a traditional recipe of sambhar powder from South India. Thanks to a South Indian friend of mine, whom I met in France, and who shared this recipe with me.

Ingredients

For powder 1:

  • Gram dal(chana dal) ½ cup
  • Toor dal (arhar dal) ½ cup
  • Urad dal 4 tsp
  • Rice 2 tsp
  • Coriander seeds 1 cup
  • Fenugreek seeds 2 tsp
  • Black peppercorn 1 tsp
  • Red chilies 4-5 or to taste
  • Turmeric 1 tsp

For powder 2:

  • Whole red chilies 50g
  • Fenugreek seeds  4tsp
  • Asafoedita 1tsp
  • Coriander seeds 1/4cup

Method of preparation

For powder 1:

  1. Dry roastgram dal, urad dal, toor dal, and rice powder for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
  2. Dry roast all the spices for 2 minutes.
  3. When the spices and lentils cool down, make a fine powder of all the ingredients in the grinder.
sambhar powder

Store sambhar powder1 in the airtight containe and use as required.

Method of preparation

For powder 2:

  1. Dry roast coriander seeds, fenugreek seeds and coriander seeds for 2 minutes.Turn off the heat and add asafoetida.
  2. Grind all the ingredients into a fine powder.

Store sambhar powder 2 in the airtight container and use as required.
